The longest nerve in the body is the sciatic nerve which stretches from the buttocks, through the leg and to the feet.

Irritated or inflamed sciatic nerve can cause intense pain, which can be felt in the back, above the ribs and below the knees. It can also be accompanied by numbness and tingling of the legs.
