The accumulated mucus and phlegm in your chest can be really uncomfortable, causing congestion and sharp pains.

Mucus is sticky substance that acts as a lubricant and filter, and its role is to protect the lungs by filtering the air we breathe. It catches dirt and debris thus preventing its absorption in your body. The nose and sinuses have cells that produce watery secretion that helps the mucus protect our body.

In cases of cold, your nose produces excessive amounts of watery secretions. This crusty and thick mucus is caused by dryness and leads to nasal drip and congestion. The phlegm is very similar to the mucus but it’s thicker, and it’s produced in the lower part of the airways. It protects the lungs from various irritants. It usually contains viruses, dead bacteria and white blood cells, so always spit it out, and don’t swallow it.

You need just 5 ingredients, and the most important ones are sage and marshmallow root.

Marshmallow root has the ability to reduce inflammation in the stomach lining and also treats diarrhea, stomach ulcers, constipation, urinary tracts stones and urinary inflammations. Also it speeds up the process of healing in cases of wounds, infections, burns and ulcers. The herb produces a sticky and thick substance that soothes the mucous membranes, by moistening them.

Sage is rich in numerous volatile oils, and it was discovered that it relaxes the nerves, boosts the memory, relieves anxiety, and provides diuretic and antioxidant effects. It’s particularly useful in cases of indigestion, swelling, joint pain, abdominal issues, sore throat and menopause.

Maple syrup, lemons and flaxseed are the other ingredients. Lemons strengthen the immunity and are rich in vitamin C and bioflavonoids that prevent damage caused by free radicals. Flaxseed is a powerful demulcent and expectorant, and maple syrup boosts the immune system and is rich in zinc.
